Films about relationships — which are foreign to me personally — are usually not what I’m drawn to. However, these two films are a powerful portrayal of two different life challenges — The Farewell (Amazon Prime) and Marriage Story (Netflix).
I imagine many of you have seen Marriage Story already, as it was Oscar-nominated, but if you haven’t – don’t miss the incredible performance of the lead actors. To be honest, I never understood the appeal of Adam Driver, now I get it. It’s a touching reminder of the deep emotional bonding, marriage or not, before life happens.
The Farewell may be a Chinese film dealing with death in another culture, but the struggle is universal. Being Asian-American, I love the dinner scene with competing sociocultural attitudes and generational divide — over dim sum. Death is real with extra sauce from Awkwafina.
