HBO’s new Perry Mason miniseries definitely isn’t your parents’ Perry Mason. Not to diminish the Raymond Burr version — he famously played the title character from 1957-1966 and reprised the role in 26 made-for-TV movies in the 80s and 90s. The current incarnation, set in Depression-era Los Angeles, focuses on Mason’s early days as a scruffy private investigator trying to make ends meet. He takes on a shocking kidnapping case, the absorbing mystery that sets everything in motion. This miniseries is gorgeously photographed, filled with great period detail, and boasts an outstanding supporting cast, from Shea Whigham to John Lithgow. You’ll get hooked on the world of Perry Mason all over again.
