Finding my favorite restaurant reopening for outside dining was like finding treasure. Il Posto Accanto is a hidden gem in the East Village of New York. A tiny space with no more than 10 tables, it now occupies the sidewalk and some of the streets on East 2nd. Il Posto has been there for 25 years and its loyal customers are neighborhood legends, artists, and families. The restaurant is owned by Beatrice, a Roman native, and her husband Julio — but everyone knows them as Bea and Baby Cakes. If you don’t know them, after a few minutes you will feel like you have. The menu, which is exceptional, is all Italian staples with a twist, made with whatever local and organic produce Bea finds that morning at the farmers market. I had the special of black squid linguini with Sicilian rock shrimp, fresh fava beans and herb pesto, and ended with a twist on an affogato, made with lemon sorbet and prosecco, the perfect meal for a hot summer evening.
