We will be exhibiting in June at the Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show
The Las Vegas Antique Jewelry & Watch Show: June 2-5, 2011
Our special piece this month is a stunning Art Deco Cartier bow brooch. It has close to 18 carats of diamonds set in platinum, is signed and numbered, and is really fantastic. Call us for a price.

We bought an exquisite antique carved coral necklace that has all sorts of animals in it. It is one of a kind and is $12,500.

We are featuring a number of earrings that are small, i.e. bathing suit earrings for the summer. The shiny gold hoops with a heart shaped green tourmaline are $450 and have a post. The white coral earrings are $650. The woven gold hoops are $550. The little starfish are $650 and can go either way. The ribbed gold and diamond hoops are $1650 and are on posts. The tiny gold hoops are $250 and give the appearance of post earrings but are clips.

Many of you ask us to let you know when we get in any Alhambra pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels. Well, we hit the mother lode, and have five pairs of earrings in mother of pearl, turquoise, lapis lazuli, malachite, black onyx and abalone. The mother of pearl and black onyx are $2600 each, The lapis, turquoise and malachite are $3200 each, and the abalone are $3700. The lapis and malachite are no longer available at Van Cleef & Arpels.

This fabulous gold link necklace by Buccellati can be worn long or doubled and is $12500.

These chic gold, black enamel and pearl earrings are a must have at $3500. They are by Tiffany, Schlumberger, and can be worn day or night.

With summer coming, shell jewelry is just the ticket. All this jewelry is by Trianon. The pearls have a pink and white shell clasp and there are matching earrings. The necklace is $1850 and the earrings are $1350. We can make a special price of $3000 for both pieces. There are three pairs of shell earrings, the first are set with aquamarine and pearls, then there is a pair set with peridot and iolite which are each $1750. The last pair are black and white shells set with diamond and pearls and are $1250.

We bought a great set of gold and diamond jewelry by Cartier. The cuff bracelet is $38000 and the earrings are $9700. These pieces are no longer made by Cartier.

The fabulous lapis beads set with gold ball beads are not signed Tiffany, but they were definitely purchased at Tiffany. They are natural, untreated beads, and are $1250. The lapis and yellow gold earrings are signed Tiffany and designed by Cummings and are $1650. This beautiful lapis and gold link bracelet is also Tiffany designed by Cummings, and is $5500.

With Father's Day and Graduation fast approaching, we thought some cufflinks and dress sets were in order. For cufflinks, we have Trianon's onyx and citrine links for $650. Our favorites are the airplane cufflinks in gold, platinum, rubies and emeralds for $3250. The gold rectangles with red enamel are $1250. The Kieselstein-Cord bloodstone intaglios were made in 1985 and are $1650. The back side is plain and could be engraved. We bought two pairs of Hermés links, one in brown leather and one in black; each pair is $350.

For dress sets, we love this gold and enamel sea creatures set at $2750. It was made in the 80's. We also have a classic matte gold and diamond set by Kieselstein-Cord for $3250. The penguin set is fabulous in gold, black enamel and diamonds for $3250. The Barry Kieselstein-Cord alligator set was made in 1984 and is $3250.

Featuring our fabulous wood and scalloped gold ring.

Marcella was taken to an Italian restaurant, San Rocco which is located at 39 West 24th Street (212 255 4655). Marcella had parmigiana with olive oil ice cream and said it was delicious. She took Gus and friends this past weekend and they loved it too. They had the special carbonara which is made for you tableside. What we like is that it is open from 6:30 in the morning (you can have breakfast) until 2:00 in the morning. Aperitivo night is Wednesday, and brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday. San Rocco was founded and is owned by a man from Milan named Rocco Erena.
Marcella and I went to the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. McQueen, who killed himself last year at 41, was one of the most influential, imaginative and provocative designers of his generation. The clothes are beautifully displayed with masks on each mannequin and wonderful accessories. It is a smash hit with lines so be prepared to wait a bit. If you like clothes, this is a must. His trusted assistant, Sarah Burton has taken over the design duties, and based on the lovely bride's dress and maid of honor dress in the royal wedding, the house is in good hands. The book accompanying the exhibit is exquisite.
We plan to go this weekend to see the documentary on Yves Saint. Laurent & Pierre Bergé called L'Amour fou. We hear it's quite good.
Our friend, Nicolas Luchsinger from Van Cleef and Arpels was recently on a segment on CBS Sunday Morning called "Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels". The entire program was dedicated to "Design". Another friend, the curator, Sarah Coffin, was also featured. Nicolas has spoken before at the Jewelry Historians and he was one of the best we ever had, I think. You must see this show, I am sure you will enjoy it.
Charles Finch's The September Society is the second in the Charles Lennox series, the first of which was nominated for an Agatha. While he is American and lives in New York, he went to Oxford and writes convincingly of Victorian life in the university town. Lennox is a very appealing hero and we thoroughly enjoyed this book.
We have now read the latest Charles Finch novel and loved it. It is called A Stranger in Mayfair and follows Lennox, the amateur Victorian detective after his marriage to Lady Jane and his election to Parliament.
Marcella gave me a book to read that I had read about. It is called Parisian Chic, A Style Guide by Ines de le Fressange. She discusses shopping, eating, home decor, makeup, etc. and it is most enjoyable. We have excerpted some of her tips that we think are very important.
1. Never wear pink lipstick
2. Never match your makeup to your clothes
3. Wear your diamond necklace, especially an old Riviére necklace, with jeans
4. Outfits are out. Mix couture with street fashion
5. Roll up your sleeves
6. Belt it, preferably with a man's belt, with the long part looped over
7. Wear a man's watch
8. Don't wear a big necklace and big earrings at the same time
9. White shirts and white jeans are always good, as is a navy blazer
10. Wear diamonds in the day
11. Cuff bracelets are always good
12. It is very important to keep your teeth white
There are many more tips and I think you will enjoy this book.
The 34th Annual Jewelry Camp will be held this summer at the Tarrytown House Estate & Conference Center in Tarrytown from July 15-17, 2011. It is a fabulous program directed by our dear friend and colleague Edward Lewand & his wife Sandy. The program consists of educational lectures and breakout classes. If you love jewelry or just want to learn more about jewelry, this would be a wonderful experience for you.
We would like to encourage everyone again to join The American Society of Jewelry Historians. It is only $75 per year and you get a fabulous newsletter and lectures if you are in New York. We just had a special evening at the Van Cleef and Arpels exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Museum. You can learn more about it on their website above, or call Jane at our office for more information.
If you would like to be added to our newsletter, please send us your name and email. |
