We just finished the AVENUE SHOW at the Armory and a good time was had by all. Our booth was beautiful.
The Los Angeles Antiques Show: April 14-17
The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair: April 29-May 2
We were very sad to hear of Elizabeth Taylor's death. As many of you know, we bought the Bulgari emerald and diamond ring, that was the first piece of jewelry given to her by Richard Burton. It was in the Bulgari show in Milan and Paris, and is now owned by one of our closest friends.

Here is a picture of Stacey and Bob Sauerberg at the Vanity Fair Oscar party. She is in our Buccellati earrings and cuff. Bob is the president of Conde Nast.

On our special page this month, we are featuring David Webb jewelry. We bought these dreamy clip-on earrings with over 18 carats of cascading round, baguette and pear shape diamonds. They are a dream on the ear, and are $67,500. The rock crystal and diamond ring is $27,500. Both were made around 1960.

This Buccellati brooch is an early one. It has 4.53 carats of diamonds set in white and yellow gold. It is $12,500.

We bought a wonderful ring by Poiray, Paris, from the Symbole Collection. It is a size 6 and cannot be sized. The ring is very cleverly made so that the two outside gold bands can be put over the center diamond one for less dressy occasions. This ring is $3250 and if you're a size 6, you're a lucky girl.

Spring is on the way and these pieces would be perfect. The cuff bracelet is 18 karat gold and steel with diamond accents and is $4250. The wooden earrings are by Trianon and feature mabe pearls and corals for $2750.

We are featuring Gus's picks in this photo. Gus loves rock crystal and both these pieces are from around 1970. The necklace has fluted rock crystal sections, each centered with a cabochon sapphire and diamonds all set in 18 karat yellow gold. It is $16,500. The ring is set with a cabochon sapphire surrounded by diamonds in 18 karat white gold. It is only $2250.

We got two Aldo Cipullo chain necklaces that we have never had before. Each has oval links interspersed with gold screws. They are great together or mixed with other chains. They are $5500 each.

We have three big rings that are fun and very well priced. The cabochon moonstone is claw set in 14 karat gold. It was made about 1970 and is only $1950. The cabochon green quartz ring has a faceted pink sapphire on each side and the color combination is wonderful. It is set in platinum and 18 karat yellow gold and is only $2250. The 18 karat gold ring is domed and textured with a rope motif. It is by Tiffany and is $1950.

Good earrings are always popular. The hammered gold ones are David Webb and are
$3250. You could wear these every day. The gold and diamond ribbed hoops are very flattering at $4250. Lapis is always in demand and these in the David Webb ones are surrounded by diamonds, and are $10,500.

With the Van Cleef and Arpels show at the Cooper Hewitt, we are seeing lots of interest in their jewelry. I have had friends from out of town go to the show in the last few weeks and they have raved. The gold and exotic wood hoops are from France and are $8750. The pendant is agate and gold and is on a leather cord with little gold keys. It is $4250. The drop earrings are called the "Magic" and have mother of pearl tops and tigers eye butterflies. They are $3750.

We had a snake necklace in last month's newsletter and there was a lot of interest. We bought three snake pieces this month. The 14 karat gold bracelet is from around 1900, and is in superb condition. It has a diamond in the head and is $5750. The 18 karat gold necklace also has a diamond head and can be adjusted by pulling the tail tighter or looser. It is $2750. The white enamel bracelet is a show stopper. It is 18 karat and has diamonds in the head and ruby eyes. It is $10,500.

We would like to congratulate Ashley who has just had twins; Buzz, named after her father and Stewart, the girl. The babies are fine but will need to stay in the hospital a bit longer. Since their birth, we have noticed more and more twins on the streets of New York in their distinctive double strollers.
Going home the other night I dropped my cane and the nice man who retrieved it had a very cute dog. It was a puggle (half pug, half beagle) called Mattie. She was absolutely precious and if I was in the market for a dog, that's what I'd get.
Ed’s Lobster Bar
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to meet friends at Ed’s Lobster Bar in Soho. I have been to Ed’s a few times, and I think that it is THE place to go for all things lobster in New York City. The menu is full of different dishes starring lobster; such as the lobster pot pie and the lobster galette (which has been featured, along with Ed himself, on the Martha Stewart Show). My favorite however, is the lobster roll. It comes on a freshly baked hot dog bun slathered in butter. The lobster is lightly dressed with mayonnaise so as to not interfere with the flavor of the main attraction! There is so much lobster in fact, that I recommend attacking it with a fork before even attempting to pick up the bun itself. You definitely get your money’s worth.
The only downside to Ed’s is that they do not take reservations, and it is a tight squeeze. I usually grab a seat at the bar and order the chili flake margarita or another one of their great cocktails while I wait!
Ed’s Lobster Bar is located at 222 Lafayette Street. 212 343 3236.
Carpe Diem
Carpe Diem is a new spot that opened on 78th Street right off of Third Avenue. This restaurant is very close to our office and it has become a “go to” spot. The atmosphere is fun and lively, without being noisy, and the Italian food is delicious. For starters, we recommend the baby artichoke salad with truffle oil, and the crispy fried artichoke with balsamic nectar is not to be missed! For dinner, we love the veal sorrentina, the beef carpaccio, as well as the gnocchi with tomato, basil and mozzarella. The Tiramisu is our top choice for dessert! If you decide to give Carpe Diem a try- and we think you should- Ask for Alan and tell him we sent you!
Carpe Diem is located at 181 East 78th Street. 212 772 3436.
We saw Unknown with Liam Neeson and quite enjoyed it. It is full of car crashes and chases and violence. However, it’s a very good story, and one I think couples can enjoy together. January Jones from Mad Men has a featured part.
I had a theatre weekend. I was invited to City Center on Saturday night to see Where's Charley? Alas it only played for the weekend but it got an incredible review in the Times so maybe it will get picked up. Rob McClure who played Charley and in a quick change/double role his aunt was fabulous. This show has the great song "Once in Love With Amy" and other great songs by Frank Loesser. It is set in late 19th century England, when there was a real fashion for men to play women's roles. The next day we saw the Roundabout Theater's production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of being Earnest, also with the lead role of Lady Bracknell played by the marvelous Brian Bedford. It was a superb production and I urge you to see this show. Lady Bracknell wears great Victorian jewelry.
Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotry. This is a debut novel featuring a retired Russian ballerina living in Boston who decides to put her extensive jewelry collection for sale at auction. It is full of intrigue from the Soviet Union after the war and inside dealings at the auction house. I loved it.
A Lesson in Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear, is the eighth Maisie Dobbs mystery. The time is 1932, and Maisie goes undercover at a private college in Cambridge, where she has to deal with rising Nazi sympathizers in Britain. Each Maisie novel is better than the previous one. I love these books.
Starting on Sunday HBO has a five part remake of Mildred Pierce with Kate Winslet. This was the signature movie of Joan Crawford and we are looking forward to this event. HBO will repeat it frequently so you shouldn't miss it.
My friend Christina recently recommended a new product by NARS that she got at Sephora. I noticed how terrific her lips looked and she told me. It is Nars' matte velvet lip pencil that you use instead of lipstick. She loves it because it stays on all day, and since she is the world's best manicurist (646 725 6547 or 212 737 3388 at European Hair at 24 E 73rd) it is important that she be well-groomed at all times. I tried Walkyrie, Bettina and Bahama at her suggestion and I love them all. This is a great product and he is famous for his wonderful colors.
Marcella discovered a great store called The Thrifty Hog at 11 West 25th Street. It is open every day except Monday. She says the new and used vintage goods for women, men and children are terrific, and most importantly, the people are really nice. I plan to scoot right down as soon as possible. This shop supports homeless families.
The 34th Annual Jewelry Camp will be held this summer at the Tarrytown House Estate & Conference Center in Tarrytown from July 15-17, 2011. It is a fabulous program directed by our dear friend and colleague Edward Lewand & his wife Sandy. The program consists of educational lectures and breakout classes. If you love jewelry or just want to learn more about jewelry, this would be a wonderful experience for you.
My C200 focus group recently had our meeting at the Caudalie Vinotherapie spa at the Plaza Hotel. I had a massage and it was lovely. The manager is Croatian and gave us an interesting talk on Croatian wines. Both the Riesling, and the Chardonnay grapes originated in Croatia.
We would like to encourage everyone to join The American Society of Jewelry Historians. It is only $75 per year and you get a fabulous newsletter and lectures if you are in New York. We just had a special evening at the Van Cleef and Arpels exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Museum. You can learn more about it on their website above, or call Jane at our office for more information.
