I have a new physical therapist called Maria, as my beloved Marti has moved to Colorado. Maria is is quite good and I can highly recommend her. She told me about a very useful service that I have tried. Carmel Limousine has several vans that are wheelchair and scooter equipped, and you can just ride up the ramp and right in and out. Because it was so hot, I used them to go to the show on 18th street where I had ridden before. Then last week, I got caught in the rain on 80th Street and my scooter shorted out and they came and got me. I used them for the theatre when my sister was here. Lovely drivers. They also do regular car service. Call 212-666-6666.
The Standard Grill
I had a fun night out with friends about a month ago at the Standard Grill. I would suggest walking down the Highline beforehand, since it is located at the ground floor of the Standard Hotel which is right at the end of the walk.
The restaurant is very lively, and is a great place to go for a fun celebration. Instead of your typical bread basket, they brought little bowls of pieces of parmesan cheese and crunchy salted radishes to start the meal which I really enjoyed. I had a green bean salad that was made more interesting with a yogurt and cinnamon dressing, and striped bass prepared with a truffle sauce and a poached quail egg. Although I went for a more adventurous dinner selection, other people in my group ordered classics such as the steak au poivre and the bacon cheese burger (which they are famous for).
Instead of desert, we decided to end the meal with their “Highline Fling”, which is a punch made with champagne, orange liquor, grapefruit and lavender. It is served in a large crystal glass with 4 straws! We definitely got some looks from fellow diners, but it was delicious and a great thing to order if you are with a fun group!
The Asia Society For only a $65 yearlong membership, you can get free admission to the museum, discounted exhibits, receive a catalog of events and get a 10% discount in the Asia store and the Garden Café. Telephone number is 212 288 6400. It is located at 725 Park Avenue, between 70th and 71st streets. The café is a terrific place to have lunch, with great atmosphere and reasonable prices. It's a good place to have a celebration. I went to a birthday lunch for 12, and took my sister.
I had the opportunity to attend Jewelry camp over the weekend of July 15-17. What a unique and fun experience! Jewelry Camp takes place twice a year, in January and July, and is run by our good friends Ed and Sandy Lewand. It is three days of very interesting lectures and hands on classes, covering every jewelry topic that you can imagine. It is extremely informative and useful for anyone; if you are in the business or even if you just love jewelry! I particularly enjoyed Michael Goldstein’s class on antique diamonds, as well as Joyce Jonas’s lecture on Jewelry from the 1930’s. All of the information is on their website should you like to sign up, and tell them we sent you!
We saw The Help this weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Octavia Spencer are fabulous in the leading roles in this depiction of the life of maids in 1960’s Jackson, Mississippi. This was a very special book and I think you will like the movie.
We saw Sarah’s Key with Kristin Scott Thomas, taken from the book by Tatiana de Rosnay, which we recommended earlier. It’s about a low point in French history when the French police rounded up the Jews so they could be sent to German concentration camps. It is a wonderful movie.
My sister was here as was Jean and we saw War Horse. One of the producers is Roy Furman, one of my old Wall Street partners. We congratulate Roy on its winning the Tony for Best Play. It is about World War I, the last war where calvary was used extensively and a young boy’s determinaion to find his horse Joey afterwards. The horses are puppets and they are simply fantastic. This is a very special show.
We also saw Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the musical, and absolutely loved it. You may remember the movie: three transvestites, i.e. illusionists take a bus across Australia so that Tick can see his son, the product of a youthful indiscretion. Tony Sheldon, who plays the older one, Bernadette, is spectacular; he’s been performing in Australia for forty years but never in America. The costumes and songs are great, and you want it to never end. This is a must and I could easily see it again. Roy Furman is also a lead producer on this.
TNT continues to come up with summer winners. The Closer, with Kyra Sedgewick as the Assistant Chief of the LAPD, originally from Atlanta, in its last season and we love it. Her team in Major Crimes is wonderfully cast and we feel like all of her detectives are part of the family. You can watch old episodes with pleasure as each stands alone.
Other TNT favorites include HawthoRNe, where Jada Pinkett Smith plays a nurse in a busy Richmond hospital, and Rizzoli and Isles, where Angie Harmon plays a Boston cop. Both series are wonderful.
Masterpiece Mystery has come up with another winner. Having successfully dramatized Miss Marple, Hercule Poiret , Morse , Lewis and Wallander, they have done three episodes of Zen, Michael Dibdin’s fabulous detective from Rome. I highly recommend these books by Dibdin which feature Aurelio Zen, a police detective originally from Venice. He is played here perfectly by the very handsome Rufus Sewell. The third and final episode was the best. If you missed these, catch them in reruns. All of these are based on books we loved and the casting of Sewell as Zen is just perfect.
For those of you who are devotees of Mad Men I urge you to watch The Hour on BBC America on Wednesdays at 10pm. It is a six part series on the BBC about a news program called The Hour. It is set in the 50’s and there is lots of smoking, drinking and putdowns of women. The first episode was on the 18th, but will be repeated. This is a wonderful show.
I’ve had bad luck with books lately, not finishing a lot of them and finishing some I really didn’t like. Finally, I discovered a new author I liked, Margaret Leroy. I first read A Soldier’s Wife, set in Guernsey during World War II. My favorite character was a small girl named Millie, and I think you will love her too. Then I read Yes My Darling Daughter, which also features a small girl , this time called Sylvie. I didn’t like her at first as she thought she had lived in a previous life, and I don’t usually like that theme. However she grew on me and it is very readable.
One of our favorites, Daniel Silva has just come out with his fourteenth Gabiel Allon novel, Portrait of a Spy. Allon is an Israeli spy, assassin and art restorer who has tried to retire to Cornwall with his lovely Italian wife. Alas, a terrorist network needs unraveling and Gabriel is pulled back into the fray. As usual, this is a wonderful read.
The New York Times reviewed Breaking Silence by Linda Castillo, featuring Detective Kate Burkholder in a rural Ohio community that is heavily Amish. I liked the review so I ordered it on my Kindle that day. Kate is formerly Amish, which helps and hurts her in her job. This is a fast read you just can’t put down and I plan to read her other books
Marcella recently read A.E. Hotchner’s Everyone comes to Elaine’s, a microcosm of the last forty years of New York’ s media elite. Elaine Kaufman died in 2008 and the restaurant closed shortly afterwards. This is fascinating reading for all who are interested in New York.
I decided to get my ears re-pierced, and went to a very nice woman called Beverly Davidoff at Far-N-Wide III at 250 East 90th street. She’s an expert as she was the second one I tried recently and they are perfect. I wanted to wear diamonds on a wire and deco earrings. I must stress however that just because you have holes doesn’t mean you have to put something in them. I will not convert all my clip earrings as they are not meant to have posts, especially the Cipullo ones. I do not want slits instead of holes. Funny enough my old holes are still operative even though they were done when I was 20 and are too low. Her telephone is 212 831 6854, and her shop has many interesting things.
We went to the JA show at the Javits Center recently. Most vendors thought it was a good show with brisk sales. The overriding trend we saw was chains, chains, chains, in gold, silver, wood, horn and even one we liked in resin, vermeil and frog. We believe this will be a big trend for fall.
Friends of mine from London recently sent me information on a blog that their daughter writes for. It is called Weekly Wrinkle, and her name is Joanna Sharron. I love it. She recommended Shiseido Protection Compact foundation and I have since become a devotee. It looks good and protects the face from the sun’s harsh rays. I think you will like this blog.
General Tso's Chicken
I recently came across the best recipe for a healthy alternative to a Chinese takeout classic, General Tso’s Chicken, on one of my favorite food blogs. Although we have some amazing Chinese restaurants here in the city, sometimes it is nice to be able to recreate the lighter version at home. The ingredients are all pretty easy to find and most likely in the Asian section of your grocery store with the exception of sambal olek - I just substituted Chili Garlic sauce. I was amazed at how this recipe came out! It comes together fast, and all of the ingredients for the sauce keep for a long time, so you can make it again and again, without having to run back out to the store. The author refers to it as “General Tao” chicken, but it’s the same thing. I highly recommend this website, The Healthy Foodie, for many other healthy and delicious recipes!
