The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair: April 29-May 2
With Spring on the way we have clients who are interested in redesigns, especially of their bead necklaces. We recently did an amethyst one and made it long with the addition of little ruby and gold beads. It looked terrific. Contact me if this interests you. We can add wooden of semi-precious beads to keep the cost down.
We recently bought a Van Cleef and Arpels deco bracelet in rock crystal, platinum and sapphires. It is very special and goes for $52,500.

This owl brooch is from the 60's and has a turquoise body and is set in gold with diamonds and sapphires. It is by Van Cleef and Arpels and is $32500. If it seems like we have a lot of Van Cleef jewelry it's because we do. They are one of our favorites and if you haven't seen the show at the Cooper Hewitt, we urge you to do so before it closes in July. The reviewer from the New York Times didn't like the show, primarily because Van Cleef sponsored it and over half the pieces were from their private collection. She even didn't like the cases which we thought were wonderful. We disagree strongly with her and are just grateful for any jewelry show, especially a beautiful one like this. You must go. My husband went by himself and stayed for two hours.

The shiny gold flowers can be worn all the time, day or night. They are $2750. We love the green enamel brickwork ones which curve into the face This is an unusual pair at $3250.

We have three pretty pairs of signed earrings for you to look at. The mother of pearl and diamond earrings are Van Cleef and Arpels Rose de Noel and are $16,500. The hematite and diamond earrings are by Angela Cummings and are discs set with collet set diamonds in yellow gold for $5750. The other earrings are by Elizabeth Gage and have golden beryls set in yellow gold and diamonds with a pearl accent for $5750.

We've got three very different bracelets here. The charm bracelet is in 14k gold and has 9 charms, including a Christmas tree dated 1961. It is $2250. The link bracelet is really heavy and has Gucci style links. It is $12,500. The bracelet with the gold leaves is Van Cleef and Arpels France and is $4250.

We love purple and have three pretty amethyst pieces this month. This beautiful necklace has two shapes of faceted amethyst beads with slight gradations in color. It is $1400. The cabochon amethyst flower earrings have a diamond in the center and are set in gold. They are Van Cleef and Arpels and are $8750. The adorable little turtle brooch is by Cartier. His little diamond head and tail move. He has emerald eyes and is set in gold and is $7750. This is one very cute turtle.

We like small brooches and have three nice ones this month. We have two little cat brooches. This little cat on the left is not signed but has a pearl body and a ruby eye. It also has a small price of $750. This tiny bow is all pave diamonds set in yellow gold and also has a small price of $950, even though it has over one carat of diamonds. The "winking" cat in black onyx is an iconic piece by Van Cleef and Arpels, set in gold with an emerald eye at $5750.

This turquoise, sapphire, and diamond dome ring is not signed but really says spring at $2250. This diamond and gold pave ring is Van Cleef and Arpels and is chic, chic, chic. This one is $5500. The gold ring with four concentric circles of different sizes is fun to wear. The circles keep moving while you wear it. It is $1650 and a real conversation piece.

We bought three pair of signed earrings. The Verdura curled gold leaves are $2750. The turquoise surrounded by blue topaz are by Michel della Valle and are $3250. The Bulgari earrings are old coins with three baguette diamonds in each one and are $7750.

We have three lovely pieces designed by Marcella. These two bakelite bracelets are studded with gold circles and are $1250 for the pair. I bought these bracelets from her contact while she was in Italy and just look what she did with them! The wooden ring is bezel set with a .81ct diamond and is $1950. These pendant earrings are coral and jadeite, a beautiful color combination. They are set in gold and have a diamond at the top. They are $3250.

We were recently featured in the blog Quintessence by Stacey Bewkes. She writes up high end shopping and does an excellent job. She captured the flavor of our shop, our goods and our people perfectly.
We ate recently at Benoit, an Alain Ducasse restaurant which is located at 60 West 55th Street. (646 943 7378). My C200 Group had a meeting there in a private room, which is good to know about if you are having a party. The food is fabulous and the service is superb. We strongly recommend this restaurant.
The remake of the classic JANE EYRE is really good. Mr. Rochester and Jane are actors you don't know and I thought they were excellent. It is a tiny bit too long.
Four of my favorite contemporary authors have new books out. Donna Leon has DRAWING CONCLUSIONS, another Commissario Guido Brunetti novel and it is not a disappointment. A woman is found in her Venice apartment, apparently dead of a heart attack, but Brunetti has a nagging suspicion that all is not as it seems and the subsequent investigation keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Anne Perry has a Thomas and Charlotte Pitt novel, TREASON AT LISSON GROVE, which involves Charlotte more than usual. Again, it was hard to put down.
Last but certainly not least, Henning Menkell has THE TROUBLED MAN, probably the last in the Kurt Wallander series. It is the eleventh in this series and Wallander is now 60 and increasingly out of touch with modern society. He talks to his daughter's father-in law, a retired submarine commander who tells him some tales of the Cold War in Sweden, only to disappear some days later, followed by that of his wife. Wallander has to unravel this mystery, earning the enmity of the government higher-ups. This is a fitting end to the series and I loved it.
A Lesson in Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear, the eighth Maisie Dobbs mystery. The time is 1932 and Maisie goes undercover at a private college in Cambridge and has to deal with rising Nazi sympathizers in Britain. Each Maisie novel is better than the previous one and I love these books.
HBO has a five part remake of Mildred Pierce with Kate Winslet. This was the signature movie of Joan Crawford and we enjoyed this event, even though we hated the daughter. HBO will repeat it frequently so you shouldn't’t miss it.
We recently watched The Kennedys, an eight part series on REELZ channel 131 on Time Warner Cable here. The series was originally made for the History channel, which decided to pass due to worries about the accuracy and family concerns. REELZ swooped right in and has put themselves on the map. We loved the series and it is sure to be repeated. The casting was unbelievable with Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes as JFK and Jackie. Nobody I know had ever heard of this channel but they won't forget it now.
Two other series of note on television are a new Upstairs Downstairs on PBS and The Killing on AMC. It is 1934 and a new family, a young diplomat and his wife, has moved into the Bellamy's former home. It is a very difficult time with the rise of the Nazis in Germany. The Killing is based on a Danish cop show and is set in Seattle with a female cop who is trying to get married and move to Sonoms but gets sidetracked by the murder of a teenage girl. Both shows are on Sunday night and are wonderful.
Jane put us on to Aveeno lotion and now we have bought and love their daily scrub.
Sephora has fat colored eye pencils in blue and green for $ 6.00. We really like these.
The 34th Annual Jewelry Camp will be held this summer at the Tarrytown House Estate & Conference Center in Tarrytown from July 15-17, 2011. It is a fabulous program directed by our dear friend and colleague Edward Lewand & his wife Sandy. The program consists of educational lectures and breakout classes. If you love jewelry or just want to learn more about jewelry, this would be a wonderful experience for you.
We would like to encourage everyone to join The American Society of Jewelry Historians. It is only $75 per year and you get a fabulous newsletter and lectures if you are in New York. We just had a special evening at the Van Cleef and Arpels exhibit at the Cooper Hewitt Museum. You can learn more about it on their website above, or call Jane at our office for more information.
